hi. i am new to linux and unbuntu. chose the os from being tired of windows and i like the way unbuntu operates( and how kde looks ). with windows though it seemed very easy to download programs to decode and burn movies like nero or converter x. with unbuntu i cant find any decoders for the movies i download and i cant burn them. i dont want to go back to windows.

There are some you can use. However I do not usually do things like that, I've used some times vlc to transcode films.

You'll need to install some things first:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-restricted-extras vlc

google for vlc manuals for instructions to transcode video/audio formats

For burning the resulting images you can use brasero AFAIK
