How best use PCM in vol control ALSA mixer ?

What is the PCM control used for? How should I use it and what does it do? Is it for playback only and what should I look for in using it? It does effect the output volume I know but then so does the Master.

PCM is usually sounds generated by various programs and the like, beeps and boops that ubuntu will create when your logging in or whatever, it however only effects the beeps and boops, it won't effect things like microphone volume or cd volume. the master volume control will effect all the various sounds

I use a laptop (Acer 5920) whic has a volume wheel in front. It used to be connected to the "surround" switch in ALsa but has changed to headphones (I assume) where can I check the connection settings? The grapchical gnome interface does not offer this option.
