i downloaded gnome but when i press play nothing happens, can you help me out

How do you mean "Downloaded Gnome"? Do you mean Ubuntu?

you downloaded gnome what? gnome doesn't have a play button because it is a graphically user interface, a graphical user interface is what you see after you log on.

what are you trying to "play"? what did you download? what is it supposed to do when you press play? where did you get it from?

have you installed the ubuntu restricted extras?

if not, then go into terminal and type

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

enter your password when asked, it will not show on the screen.

If you want to play videos without facing further problems then please do the following:

sudo apt-get install vlc

Why didn't you say that you wanted to play DVDs. If you use language you are comfortable with then it is easier for all and get's you sorted out quicker. As you can see above, trying to use uncommon language has raised questions by the helpers to get what you mean clarified so that the help given is what you need.

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install libdvdread4; sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh; sudo apt-get -y upgrade
