Transfering USB formatted with OS to Hard Drive

Asked by Jeffery Simpson

Hello, I have recently had a problem. I Booted Ubuntu V12.04 from a 16gb USB stick, but now I bought a 500gb Hard drive and I don't know how to transfer all of the USB data to the free 500GB of the Hard drive. I need an answer soon.

Thanks,
Jeffery Simpson

Thank you for taking the time to open this question and helping make Ubuntu better.
You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at http://askubuntu.com or http://ubuntuforums.org .

You can transfer all you personal data from the USB to the HDD. It is a bit difficult to transfer the installation altogether.

So, boot from Ubuntu USB, connect the HDD and transfer your personal data. Also you can transfer your configurations from your home directory. Use the "rsync" command for a reliable transfer.

Please read the documentation here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/rsync

After that, you can install Ubuntu to the HDD from scratch.

Best Regards

Did you use the USB stick and run Ubuntu off it or is it just the liveCD on a USB stick?

Thanks
