combine partitions without the loss of files

I am trying to combine a created partition with the rest of my hard drive so that I can get the full use of memory out of my computer.

You can resize a partition with Gparted see here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/66000/how-to-merge-two-partitions

Also note that you may not need to merge the partitions at all because you can mount more than one partition at a time
