Lost Background Wallpaper

Asked by dlfuller

I have a simple 8.10 installation mostly using defaults that includes simple-ubuntu.jpg in System > Appearance > Background.

This wallpaper appears during startup and did appear as my Desktop Background until early this week. Then the Desktop started to only have the solid color background. Switching Backgrounds, changing Appearance settings, etc., have not changed this behavior. What happens is simple-ubuntu.jpg is there during startup, but disappears at the point the Desktop menubar starts to appear. Then the desktop's background changes to a solid color.

Nothing obvious (to me) in the logs.

Certainly not an earth-shaking problem. It's a concern that something more serious is corrupted plus an interest in a better understanding of how Ubuntu works.

In Appearance on the backgrounds tab has the bottom button/drop-down become "Horizontal Gradient" instead of "Solid Colour"

Seems I solved my own problem, but am not sure exactly what did it.

In System > Administration > nVidia X Server Settings (driver 96.43.09), I reset the X Server Display Configuration and then saved the X Configuration file without merging with the existing file (merge is the default).

Also I saved this new current configuration in the nvidia-settings configuration dialog of X Server Settings.

Finally a run of fsck on my main drive and the Desktop Background wallpaper returned to normal after start up. No solid color and it has remained that way since.

Thanks to all for the efforts in answering questions here. It's appreciated.
