Ubuntu-desktop can only use safe mode

I have a new install of 10.10 and a first time user. I am able to login to the desktop using safe mode, but when I try to login using the normal desktop, the system after a few seconds returns the machine back to the login screen. Is there something more that I need to do in the installation?

Safe mode seems to work pretty good except I can not install any new applications from the software center.

I appreciate any help.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you installed with?
Did you check the CD for defects?

Problem solved mysteriously. I spent some time in safe mode and now can login into the desktop. I wish I knew why it now works so hopefully it stays this way. Thanks for the suggestion.
