Why does gnash need codecs?

Why does gnash need codecs to play a youtube video? When I try to play one, I get the dialog box asking me to search for a suitable codec. This is very unlike Adobe Flash - movies just play. This would make Gnash a bad alternative for me as I live in the US and would like not to break any of those Copyright or IP laws or whatever surrounds codecs.

Well the Flash player still contains codecs, it's just a whole legal distribution thing, something we can't *really* do, plus this is a *true* linux client. Linux programs generally have modularity in mind, you see this way we aren't having a new copy of codecs in gnash, when we might have them installed globally already.

You can legally purchase and download the codecs from fluendo.com
