Asked by Legimet

The version in the repository is really old. Will it ever be updated to Glassfish 3.1.1?

You might want to ask around in the Glassfish community, but by my reading probably not. (disclaimer: I am not a lawyer)

Only open source software can be placed in the main repositories, and even in the restricted repositories must have some fair use clause and may not be used in some countries depending on licensing restrictions. Oracle seem to have been changing their licensing over the last few years, so many things are disappearing (eg Sun Java) or have never been in the repositories (eg database). In the former case the version left behind is the last one that was possible to be included and that appears to be the pattern here. The licensing for Glassfish seems to be some kind of "dual license" which can only confuse the issue.

Oracle don't seem to have a problem with releasing versions of software that are freely available for install (eg Virtual Box PUEL, Database XE, and probably Glassfish) but the licensing appears to be incompatible with any of the Canonical repositories.

If this is the case you could see if anyone has made a PPA (Personal Package Archive) which will work much the same way, or make a PPA yourself, but I'm not sure about the restrictions on this. (Might not be allowed from Oracles' standpoint)
