gimp 2.8 icon disappears from launcher

Asked by Jim Kress

I don't know if this is an issue w/ gimp 2.8 or ubuntu.

I am using the 64 bit version of ubuntu 12.04 lts. the gimp package (gimp 2.8.0-1ubuntu0ppa4~precise) is from the following ppa: ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gimp

I launched gimp 2.8 from the dash. the program opens as expected and the app icon appears for about 1 second in the launcher and then disappears. When I minimize the gimp window, it goes toward the launcher and then disappears. With no gimp app icon in the launcher, I cannot open the gimp app window again. My only recourse is to go to the dash and launch gimp again.

I think the gimp app icon should remain in the launcher as long as the gimp app is open.

Try:

mv ~/.gimp-2.8 ~/.gimp-2.8_old

Then rerun the app

If you run:

gimp

In a terminal, is it ok? If it crashes, what text is in the terminal?

I have the exact same problem (with Ubuntu 12.04 x64, unity 3d, GIMP 2.8 from the same ppa - haven't tried in unity 2d). As a work-around I dragged the GIMP icon from the dash to the launcher, so that it's locked to launcher. The icon stays on there all the time now and definitely doesn't disappear.

Hope this helps until the bug is fixed!

Thx for the info. This worked for me, too.

Same here, Ubuntu 12.04 x64, unity 3d, GIMP 2.8, same ppa. Rootkowski's workaround works for me.

I am also having the same problem. Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit. I also had the same problem with the nightly builds version of Hugin. I assumed it had something to do with it being in development.

I have the exact same problem, but with Gimp 2.6(!) on Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit version.

Not to hijack this question, but there seems to be more problems with Unity and/or gnome used in Ubuntu 12.04 as described here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/134517/keyboard-shortcuts-gone-from-menus-in-some-programs-in-ubuntu-12-04

Besides my comment on the 29th of May I also added a link to a bug under "Related bugs" on this page - direct link: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/995916

There is described a solution there.
You have to update unity and bamf from precise-proposed. That fixes the problem!
You can activate precise-proposed from Ubuntu Software Center - Updates (tab) - Install updates from: Pre-released updates (precise-proposed).
I have tested it and it works. Now Gimp does not disappear when minimized!

But take care. I guess precise-proposed is something similar to debian unstable or testing so there may be bugs that you do not want.

Are you still affected by this bug? Is it GIMP only or also Libreoffice or/ and other apps?
