With Gedit text editor, writing a new text can't scroll beyond first page

Thanks for responding to my question.

No, I did not press the Scroll Lock key.

This problem is not a one-time issue. It has happened many times on
many different days.

There may be more than one issue here. My problems are:

1. Can't scroll.

2. Blank screen that won't accept input (keyboard or mouse).

3. Another problem that had been happening when I tried to open an
existing text file from file manager (when another instance of gedit was
open), if I also had an e-mail (Evolution) open, it also blanked &
wouldn't accept input.

I have not been very structured in monitoring this problem, so if you
wanted me to do some testing, I would be happy to do this, but I would
like you to propose the tests.

Have there been changes to gedit (under 12.04) in the past month or so?

Is there some common factor between gedit & Evolution mail?

Hi Thomas,

I just copied a Libre-Office-Writer document into an Evolution e-mail.

The document was longer than would fit on the window.

I could not scroll past the last line displayed (that is, I could not
scroll at all).

I then typed 7 lines above the copied text.

I can scroll down 5 of those 7 lines.

I typed another 4 lines, making 11 in all.

I can scroll down 9 of those 11 lines, so consistently not the last 2 of
the typed lines.

I sent the e-mail, then opened it from the sent folder. I can scroll
all the way.

I then opened a new mail window, just typed a single letter on each
line, then continued typing even when the window was full, & I couldn't
see what I was typing. I could not scroll at all. I saved this to
drafts, then reopened it, but I could still not scroll.

I hope that you can make some sense of this.

Have you tried leafpad or mousepad. See if they are the same?

Hi,

I wasn't aware of either of these tools. I installed leafpad (mainly
because mousepad mentioned xfce).

Leafpad worked fine on typing beyond one full screen; after I reached
the bottom, it kept scrolling line by line as I typed, then I could
scroll up & down it. Even when I copied in a paragraph of text, it
continued to be OK.

While that instance of leafpad was open, I selected another large text
file & opened it with leafpad (new instance). It scrolled OK, & didn't
interfere with the first instance of leafpad.

I then opened 2 text files, each with gedit, from file manager. They
wouldn't scroll & when the second opened, all other open windows either
disappeared or went so that only the bottom few centimetres were visible
at the top of the screen (including an Evolution e-mail & a Google map.
And no keyboard or mouse response on their windows.

I closed the 2 gedit files by using the quit button on the gedit icon, &
the other windows reappeared in their correct form.

Hi,

I was just replying to an e-mail, & was reminded of another issue.

I usually delete unwanted text from the e-mail of the person who sent
it.

When this extends beyond the window, I used to just start selecting &
(using the mouse), keep scrolling until the end of the part (often all)
to be deleted.

Now, I can only scroll over (& highlight) the visible part of the text.
So I need to delete the marked section, then scroll some more, then
highlight the next visible section.

What is the output of :
