programs stopped appearing in launcher and alt-tab

Asked by Amndeep Singh Mann

This occurred after I added gedit to the launcher, and due to it for some reason not having an icon, I removed it from the launcher. After I did that and later opened up gedit again (which can happen through both the dash and the terminal) it did not appear in either the launcher or the alt-tab screen overlay. Just to duplicate the problem, I also did this with the terminal (which also did not have an icon appear on the launcher when I added it) - I got the same results. Is there are way to put these programs back on the launcher/alt-tab screen when I start them? Also, as a side question, why would any program not have an icon on the launcher when it is pinned there?

For debugging purposes: I am running Ubuntu version 11.10. Please inform me if I need to add any other information.

Yeah, I've been using Compiz - however, I do think that this is something related to the launcher (which I'm pretty certain is not part of Compiz) as this has started to fail in other ways as well, i.e. dashed lines where the launcher is are overlaying all other windows that I have open, even though the launcher itself isn't explicitly open. I've put up a screen shot on imgur: http://i.imgur.com/3Sylb.png.

Compiz draws the windows. It is the window manager.

Have you tried Unity2D.

Can you help with this problem?
