Move libgdal-dev to Xerces 3.x

Asked by Björn

Would it be possible to provide a version of libgdal-dev for lucid depending on libxerces-c3-dev instead of libxerces-c2-dev? As I can see from GDAL's website there seems to be support for Xerces 3.x.

Reason: I use a software (SUMO, see sumo.sourceforge.net) which depends on libgdal and Xerces 3.x. But on my karmic system (AMD64) libgdal1-dev depends on libxerces-c2-dev which conflicts with libxerces-c3-dev. Fortunatly SUMO still compiles with libxerces-c2-dev but using Xerces 2.x is considered deprecated and it's unclear how long it will be supported. It would be very nice if the final version of libgdal1-dev for lucid could depend on libxerces-c3-dev.

You should contact the person responsible for packaging this software
(it might be the ubuntu-devel team) and talk to them about it, if this
package is already present in debian, then we won't make any changes
in Ubuntu, we will just adopt what Debian provides and then use it, if
there's a doubt about Xerces 2.x then Debian will make a smart
decision (we usually do it with 2 dependencies, so its like either
this or the other one will make the package work) about that and also
if you want to make a different version look up more info on PPA's :)

There are lots of Linux users who don't care how the kernel works, but
only want to use it. That is a tribute to how good Linux is.
