Gambas3 version planed for official package for 18.04LTS

Asked by damscot

Hi,

the gambas3 team ppa is delivering gambas3.11.2 as package for 18.04.

I wondering which version will be available as standard default package for 18.04LTS in july.
artful was 3.9.2, xenial was 3.8.4

Rgds,
Damien.

I suggest you report a bug. If the bug and security fixes are significant then the package will be updated sooner rather than later.

Ubuntu is not a rolling release distribution and packages can be left in favour of stability

If you look at the publishing history https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gambas3/+publishinghistory you can see that at the time when Ubuntu 18.04 was prepared no working gambas3 package for Ubuntu bionic was available, and thus Ubuntu bionic does not provide gambas3 in its standard repositories.

Meanwhile there are PPAs providing such version (e.g. ppa:gambas-team/gambas3 ). Can't you use such version?

(Re-)adding a package to an Ubuntu release that is already published need special acceptance by he responsible persons. This process is triggered via a bug report, but I cannot predict whether gambas3 will ever be re-added to bionic.

The issue of PPA is the maintenance guaranty, the PPA may update packages
version without notice.
Any software incompatible with new gambas release may lead in huge pb in
production environment (while user update
their release for bug fix, new packages etc...). We experiment that during
3.10 to 3.11 migration.

Having a stable gambas3 release in LTS is a must have for production
environment.

Official 18.04LTS is planned for july 18. As ppa is able to compile 3.11
for bionic, i suppose that the issue has been solved.
I do not understand which kind of bug report we may submit (who is in
charge);
but i suppose that 3.11 can be easily build in 18.04LTS universe
release/proposed repository.

issue with updating gambas repo is mandatory if we expect next release
(ubuntu 18++ or debian 10) to have gambas3 as standard package

Damien.

You are wrong about the release date.

Ubuntu 18.04 was already released on April 26 2018, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/bionic sorry i didn't found equivalent page in
english...

*Mise à niveau :*
La mise à niveau <https://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/migration> vers Ubuntu 18.04
LTS peut être réalisée en ligne ou hors ligne depuis une installation à
jour d'Ubuntu 17.10 "The Artful Aardvark". *Elle pourra aussi être réalisée
depuis une installation à jour d'Ubuntu 16.04 LTS "The Xenial Xerus" (à

you're right this is migration from LTS 16.04 to LTS 18.04 which will be
available in july 2018.

Is there any one who can give me the way how to contact maintainer of
official gambas for debian and ubuntu
in order to push for having official gambas package for 18.04 LTS.

The correct way to contact the maintainers of the gambas3 package for a request like yours is creating a bug report.

See also https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/NewPackages

You have to be aware that Ubuntu is following Debian in several aspects, and Debian has the same issue. gambas3 is at the moment not available in Debian testing (buster), and also Debian unstable (sid) has an older version (3.9.2-2). I assume that the Ubuntu developers will want to wait with a new gambas3 package for Ubuntu 18.04 until such package is compiled for Debian buster. This might also call for a bug report in Debian.
