can't specify alternate nick in gaim (for irc)

Asked by bassam

Hi, I'm registered on freenode with username, username_ and username__
however, if I get bumped and reconnect to irc, gaim initially assigns usernam1, usernam2 etc as alternates, which requires manual fiddling on my part (setting nick, then re-identifying). I'd like to change the rule for nick alternates, but I can't find a setting in gaim anywhere.. does this exist, as a plugin perhaps? how do I configure it ?

I don't see how you can do that with GAIM. Maybe you should file a bug/ with status wishlist against it?

Of course GAIM isn't exactly the most fully featured irc client. Alternatives include xchat, xchat-gnome and irssi which all have the facility you are after.
