Bookmark Menu item Error in Firefox

Asked by IAmDaveMyers

I have a strange situation, and highly annoying too.

I'm running the following Firefox release.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009020911 Ubuntu/8.10 (intrepid) Firefox/3.0.6

The issue is this.

If I am at a page and I want to navigate to a specific bookmark, rather than opening the bookmarks menu when I click on the menu item I am taken directly to the "bookmark this page" dialogue.

At first I though it was me being innacurate with my mouse pointer, but this is the activity approximately 60 % of the time. It will even happen when I am on a page that I allready have bookmarked. Even worse, if I open a new tab (with the intention of then going to a specified bookmark) I can find myself being asked if I would like to bookmark a blank page!

This is a highly irregular occurance (which is why I haven't reported it as a bug, due to its intermitent nature). It could simply be that the "active" area for mouse clicking need to be expanded a little, or to have the system not allow you to re-bookmark a page that is allready bookmarked?

Any suggestions of how I could further investigate this would be most welcome.

thanks in advance.

David

You could perhaps try to reproduce the bug with firefox started from a terminal (just type firefox in the terminal and enter).
If the bug occurs there could be info in the terminal that could inform us about the nature of the bug (if it's a bug, I don't know for sure of course).

I just tried this and I'm not getting the "error"?

I have also been thinking it may be on first start up only? I often have >1 firefox window open (one for Gmail etc, and one for "other" stuff) I will try to be more observant over the next few days to see if it only occurs in the primary instance or if it occurs in all of them.

I will say again that it is highly variable for when it occurs. I will endeavour to remember to use your trick of opening from the terminal for the next few days, unless there is a debug screen I am able to open after the event has occured?

Thanks for your response, I will continue to observe this issue to try and gather better "evidence" of what is occuring.

Hi,
there are certain issues with mouse behaviour in firefox, maybe you'll get a hint from here:

Bert.

I tried your suggestion, but there are no messages reported into the terminal, I looked at the help screen and I am now starting firefox with the < -jconsole > option... I've tried to set this from the menu icon also, but the switch doesn't open the jconsole window. Temporarily I have not experience this problem again - Typical!

Sam

thanks for the links... they do seem to be very similar to my problems. should I mark this as thread as solved? as people can simply follow the links in Sam's post, and no longer use this one, please advise.

Just briefly...

It seems that this may be an Ubuntu issue only (from the some of the discussion on the thread 206295).

thanks for your help gents.

I cleaned my trackball yesterday, and I've not had the problem since, combined with opening firefox with the -jconsole, seems to solve my problem! especially if I open the error console from the tools menu item!

Hello all

so it seems I was right that this was a bug (I do feel pleased)

A big thanks to Sam for sending me those links, I posted my experience and I had a response saying that this bug has been treated, and there is a testing release.

this is the link to the bug report

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=406646

the fix is here (this is the "TRUNK" testing version)

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

and this is the "more stable" testing version.

https://build.mozilla.org/tryserver-builds/2009-02-19_18:<email address hidden>/

Thanks to https://bugs.launchpad.net/~dholbert for the above 2 links.

OH and the cleaning of my trackball didn't make any difference in the end, it was just "fluke" on this occasion!

I'm marking this thread as solved. Please follow any of the above links for further information.
