firefox crashing, can't set adobe plug in

Firefox crashes when opening flv files or webpages containing flv videos. Content plug in is set to VLc plug in. I have flash plug in installed, but cannot change firefox to use right plug in. dialog drop down disappears.

Can you give the output of:

lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | grep flash; dpkg -l | grep gnash; dpkg -l | grep swf
