How can Firefox 4 be installed on Ubuntu 10.10?

Asked by Robert Hoey

Ubuntu's Software gallery only lists Firefox 3.6.16, and I only know how to install software on Ubuntu using the Ubuntu Software gallery or by the regular Update Manager.
Is there a way to install Firefox 4 on Ubuntu 10.10? What detailed steps would a non-developer take to do that?

I don't think this is the appropiate place to post this question, but the answer is:

Add the following PPA to your system's repositories:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/firefox-stable/ubuntu

This gives you the current stable Firefox 4 in Ubuntu Maverick. Ubuntu modifications (Ubufox) should also be updated by the PPA though. But please be aware that this is not an official repository and therefore may damage your system. If you ever want to upgrade to a new release of Ubuntu, you should remove all PPAs first.

In addition, some features of Ubuntu may not work. For example, you'll have to install a special language pack for Firefox if you want it to display in any other language than English (use your favorite search engine to find the language pack).

Hope that helps!
