Installing Graphite-enabled OpenOffice

Asked by Henry Tin Ko Bik

I'm new to linux. I'd just installed Ubuntu Dapper Drake 6.0.6.LTS and start using it last month.

I tried to install Graphite-enabled OpenOffice from 'scripts.sil.org' website. I need this to type Myanmar fonts. I downloaded the file on my desktop. The file name is 'OOo_2.0_en-US_download_debs.sh'. It is said to be single self extracting shell script.

The installation instructions from the website said; to extract the files I have to type 'sh Ooo_2.0_linux_install_en-US_debs.sh'. When I typed that in the terminal I got the followings:

htkb@htkb-desktop:~$ sh Ooo_2.0_linux_install_en-US_debs.sh
sh: Ooo_2.0_linux_install_en-US_debs.sh: No such file or directory

I read from somewhere that I need to change the file to make it executable. So I follow the instructions and I got as follows:

htkb@htkb-desktop:~$ chmod +x OOo_2.0_en-US_download_debs.sh
chmod: cannot access 'OOo_2.0_en-US_download_debs.sh' : No such file or directory

Please help me with detailed instructions to install this file as I'm not very familiar with linux yet.

Are you sure that file is in your home folder? If you download it, it may be in the desktop folder. What does the output of this command give you?:

ls Desktop/OOo_2.0_en-US_download_debs.sh

if it gives you a file name, type "cd Desktop", and then try following the instructions you have been given

Dear Dean

Thanks a lot for your help. Following your advice I can managed to extract the file into the following default location (I didn't choose the location. The terminal just gave me)

/var/tmp/unpack_silopenofficeorg

When I look into that folder I can see 3 sub folders (DEBS, licenses, and readmes). When I further look into the DEBS folder I can see the following 24 software packages.

openoffice.org-base_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-calc_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core01_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core02_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core03_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core03u_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core04_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core04u_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core05_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core05u_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core06_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core07_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core08_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-core10_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-draw_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-graphicfilter_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-impress_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-javafilter_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-math_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-pyuno_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-spellcheck_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-testtool_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-writer_2.0.0-3_i386.deb
openoffice.org-xsltfilter_2.0.0-3_i386.deb

But when I tried to install by double clicking 'openoffice.org-base_2.0.0-3_i386.deb', the GDebi Package Installer said the latest version of Open Office software is already installed (I think, which means the original OpenOffice that come bundled with Ubuntu) and I cannot install this one. So I uninstalled all OpenOffice related files with Synaptic Package Manager. Then I tried to install again the 'openoffice.org-base_2.0.0-3_i386.deb' file. This time the package installer give me the followng warning:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: openoffice.org-core01

So I double clicked the 'openoffice.org-core01_2.0.0-3_i386.deb' file and I got the following:

Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: openoffice.org-core02

So I double clicked the 'openoffice.org-core02_2.0.0-3_i386.deb' and this time I got the following:

Error:Dependency is not satisfiable: openoffice.org-core01

When I tried the other files all of them gave the same error. I don't know how to proceed. Pls help me again.

If you use the terminal to go to /var/tmp/unpack_silopenofficeorg by doing "cd /var/tmp/unpack_silopenofficeorg" then do "sudo dpkg -i *", hopefully dpkg will work out the correct order they should be installed in.

If this fails, it's possible that there is a problem with the packages (a circular dependancy - where two packages depend on each other), and you may need to "force" the installation of one or more to start the installation off. This may introduce problems though.

Thanks Dean. It works. But there are still some problems. After going to /var/tmp/unpack_silopenofficeorg/DEBS and typing ''sudo dpkg -i *'' I got the followings in terminal:

Selecting previously deselected package openoffice.org_base.
(Reading database ... 96792 files and directory currently installed.)
Unpacking openoffice.org-base (from openoffice.org-base_2.0.0-3_i386.deb) ...
Selecting previously deselected package openoffice.org-calc.
Unpacking openoffice.org-calc (from openoffice.org-calc_2.0.0-3_i386.deb) ...

This 'Selecting' and 'Unpacking' continued for the remaining 22 packages.
After that:

Setting up openoffice.org-core 04 (2.0.0-3) ...
Setting up openoffice.org-core 05 (2.0.0-3) ...

As before, this 'Setting up' continued for the remaining 22 packages.

I supposed the program is installed. But when I looked into the 'Applications' to open the OpenOffice I can't find any launcher. I looked for the launcher everywhere but I can't find it. When I looked into the 'Add/Remove Programs' and also 'Synaptic Package Manager', OpenOffice is among the installed softwares list. But it is mentioned that it can be upgraded (the original bundled one I unstalled previously is version 2.0.2).

I don't know what to do next and at last I decided to reboot the computer, and clicked the restart button. When the computer restarted I got the following error on my screen:

Failed to start the X-server (your graphical interface).
It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?
<Yes> <No>

I choosed <Yes> and I got the following:

X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0

After pressing <OK> I got the blank sceen with log-in comand prompt.
I can log-in with my user name and password but I don't know how to continue.

When checking at the wiki.x.org website the latest X Window version is X11 R.7.1. and there are 3 security vulnerability patches available for version 7.0.

To sum up, now I have 2 problems:
1. How to fix the X server problem and bootup Ubuntu normally.
2. How to open the installed OpenOffice.

Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you.

I'm not sure what's wrong with the X installation, obviously something to do with open office has triggered it - perhaps the way it renders fonts or the input method is doing it. Try doing a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and following the on screen questions. It may be a problem with text input - you could have to look into files in the /etc/scim directory. Scim and eastern input methods is something that I'm not familiar with at all, so I've no clue how to go on with that.

The worst comes to the worst then removing the newly installed open office files (for example "sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-base" for each of the 24 packages) and doing "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" may get you your X server back.

I'm guessing the newly installed open office doesn't include the required files to make the programs show up in the menu. To learn how to do this see: https://help.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/desktopguide/C/desktop-tips.html and follow the instructions for each program you wish to appear in the menu, the program names it asks for are probably oowriter, oobase, ooimpress, oomath, oocalc, oodraw, ooweb.

Actually, something has occured to me, have you done an update over the last day or two? There has been a bad X update which has caused problems for lots of people.

Could you try doing "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade", and then rebooting before anything else?

Thanks again. After typing ''sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'' and rebooting my Ubuntu works normal again.

I'm still trying to get graphite-enabled openoffice working. I'll give feedback when I get any result.

Dear Dean

Finally its done!

I found the programs in '/opt/openoffice.org2.0/program'. The file names are swriter, scalc, simpress, etc. The type is mentioned as shell script. I used the Alacarte Menu Editor to make them appear on the Applications>Office menu. Now I can open all the programs.

Thanks very much for your help.
May God bless you.
