Unresponsive during disc activity

I've noticed that Firefox becomes very unresponsive during heavy disc activity. For example, when extracting large files Firefox becomes basically unusable. I have 6gb RAM and a quad-core, so I figure Firefox should be fine, the extraction process eats only ~40% of one thread. I've seen suggestions about moving the profile into RAM, would this solve my issue?
