Do not get sound with streaming on Firefox or any other time.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 by partitioning with Ubuntu on one side and Windows XP on the other. Both OS have Mozilla Firefox browsers. I had and still have full sound on the Windows side but do not and never have had sound on the Ubuntu side. How can I fix this?

How will copying this link in firefox - apt://ubuntu-restricted-extras solve the problem which is not limited to my browser; it is a general absence of audio when I am using Ubuntu while on the same machine I have fully functional audio using Windows - the same machine, partitioned?

I can no longer hear any sound while using youtube or music sites. Speakers are on and computer makes noise to notify but nothing else.
