Have reloaded firefox, restarted ubuntu. No change.

When you say back button, do you mean the icon or the key?

If its the icon disappearing, which happens if both versions of FF are installed, right click and customize - then add it back in. If its the key, then it was disabled in version three but can be enabled with typing about:config in the address bar and adding a boolean value browser.backspace_action and set it to 0.

Otherwise I'd suggest converting this to a bug.
