Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if you are uncertain if they are bugs. To get permission you will need the sudo command.
For example:
sudo apt-get install firefox.

thanks for the prompt response, here is the problem, after installing a program here is what apens:
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.27-7 linux-headers-2.6.27-7-generic
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
jam@ubuntu:~$ apt-get autoremove
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Should I have to use the "sudo" ? It dosn't say that i should.

Hi Sam. Thanks for you help.
This is were the problem I was having began, reading and trying the different commands from the aptget/howto, I missed that first little paragraph with the light bulb. The consequence is that there is only one command were the "sudo" is used and the rest of the info does not mention to use the sudo command, so in trying different commands, it becomes difficult to understand why no commands works. After all I am the owner, and the administrator and so on!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, this as cleared my problem, Please mention this to Shanta schelfhout and give her my Thanks also.
Jacques
