How to get Wine onto Ubuntu

Asked by Mark Leakos

Sorry, I am very new. I have mac OS X but my kids got a new computer and we thought we'd try Ubuntu. They want to be able to play civilization 3 and thus, I gather we need Wine. I downloaded this. But, when we put civ 3 disk in nothing happens. What next?

To install Wine run Applications => Accessories => Terminal, type "sudo apt-get install wine" and enter your password (there won't be any feedback, no asterisks - it's normal).

Or you can run Applications => Add/Remove..., choose "Show: All available applications", type "wine" in the "Search" field, mark "Wine Windows Emulator" with a tick in "Application" list and click "Apply Changes" button.

By the way, it's easy to search, install and remove programs with "Add/Remove applications" or "Synaptic Package Manager" (for more information go to https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/add-applications/C/gnome-app-install.html).

Since you're new to Linux I recommend purchasing Cedega (http://www.transgaming.com/products/cedega/). Its a program that uses wine, but gives you a nice interface for installing and running programs. Its only $5 a month. You can get some info on which games work at http://games.cedega.com/gamesdb/.
