I am upgrading Minecraft on 1.8.7 and it will not let me make it a Java program such as Minecraft.jar Help Please!

I go onto Minecraft.net, to download once again Minecraft to upgrade it to 1.8.7 for the security issues. Downloading and remebering the steps to transfer into a program to turn it into a Jar program and open it up for Java 6 runtime and play the game without any bugs. However when I download it to the arhcive to move it into a file on Home, it will only appear to be extracted onto desktop and will not be changed into a program. I do not know what I am doing wrong, please help.

Mark it as executable and associate jar files with your java binary. You can find this out by running:

which java

Right click the file and select the file to open it with.
