How do I run an upgrade using a tgz file?

Asked by nuttytarts

Help! I'm not a complete newbie but have never used this type of file and not sure what software I needed to decompress/unarchive it. It's a upgrade file for a sql database website I am running and this is the first time I've had to run an upgrade but the file I've downloaded is a .tgz file.

Any help gratefully received!

You should be able to double click the file to see its contents and extract from there, or right click and choose "extract here" from the menu. You should read the upgrade notes (usually in a file called UPGRADE, on their website where you downloaded it or similar) on how to perform the upgrade. Usually it is a case of disabling any extra modules the site is using, copying the new files over the old ones and running an upgrade script.

If you provided us with the name of the software I would be better able to help :)

Can you help with this problem?
