f-spot photo manager

Asked by john

When I click in Applications menu, and the Graphic in order to open F-Spot Photo Manager, there is simply s flash on the screen and nothing opens.

Runninf f-spot in Terminal gives:

john@dell:~$ f-spot
[Info 09:45:17.504] Initializing DBus
[Info 09:45:17.656] Initializing Mono.Addins
[Info 09:45:17.947] Starting new FSpot server
The program 'f-spot' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.
  (Details: serial 337 error_code 1 request_code 143 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
john@dell:~$

I do not, as one new to Ubuntu, understand what this means. I am using Intrepid Ibex on Dell Inspiron 6400.

Thank you for the instructions. Have followed them as far as adding
lines to the Synaptic Package Manager. When I click Reload I get this error:

I will need some help to sort this out, please, on what to do next.

what instructions did you follow?
I think you are suffering a bug, it is better to join the bug-thread (click the link on the right hand side of this page) and change at least the "This bug doesn't affect me" value....

I went as far as adding the lines to the Software Sources application
that we given in the link you gave me. When I click on Reload, I got the
error message and did not proceed any further.

In the very first email I received from you, timed at 10.06 here in the
UK, it had this:

our question #53447 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/53447

    Linked to bug: #286544
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/286544
"The program 'f-spot' received an X Window System error"

I followed that bug link which had some instructions.

The second email at one minute later gives this message:

Your question #53447 on Ubuntu changed:
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/53447

    Status: Open => Answered

GercoKees proposed the following answer:
i think it is a bug, and already known:
#286544

This confirmed the first email's content. I followed the line of action
suggested there. But since then I have retraced my steps in the Software
source application. We are back in the original configuration before I
sent the question.

Ah, now i see, there are some instructions on how to create a backtrace.
A backtrace is very usefull to debug a program, but can only be understand when you are a developer.

To start again from the beginning:
1) You found an error in F-Spot.
2) You cannot solve it. Neither can I.
3) I am afraid only a developer can fix the problem.
4) The error is found earlier by an other person. This person created an error-report (a bug report)
5) You might whant to join the bug-thread. Follow the above link again, read what has been done already and post your comments. It is fun, you will learn a lot, maybe there might be a workaround to get your program working, and you help to make ubuntu better!!

Feel free to ask more questions about this,
thanx and greetz

This looks as if this is as far as we can go for the time being. It is near to problem solved but not quite. However I will close the question.

Thanks for the help.
