Greyed out send/receive buttons on Evolution

I have recently started to Ubuntu and am having a problem using Evolution. I am using version 2.4.1 of Evolution, The send/receive button has greyed out and will not let me send or receive mail.
Using File, send/receive or pressing F9 does nothing either
Can anyone help
