How do I restore the panes

The panes and icons are gone, therefore can't send or retrieve emails. How would I fix this problem?

Did this just happen suddenly? Compiz on?
Try Alt + V and look in Layout > Show toolbar, make sure it's checked.

The send/receive button has greyed out, when I go to "view" and layout, show tool bar is checked. What must I do to send e-mails?
