Hello

Gnome has a global proxy config.

System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy

and fill in your details there then Evolution should pick them up and use them.

For pidgin

Open Pidgin and go to Add / Edit Account window of Pidgin.
From the drop-down box choose XMPP as the Protocol.
For the Screen name enter your Google Id (Gmail Id). eg. right2bhavi
For Server enter gmail.com

Pidgin GTalk
You can leave the Resource with the default. (i.e home)
In the Password field enter your Google ID password..
Enter Local alias as whatever you want to.

In the advanced tab,

Force old (port 5223) SSL: Checked
Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams: Un-Checked
Connect Port: 443
Connect Server: talk.google.com
Proxy type: Use Global Proxy Settings

instead of Setting proxy type as “Use Global Proxy Settings” do “127.0.0.1″ and set port as “8080″

Regards

Bhavani Shankar.

I am having the same problem too. System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy doesn't work. Any ideas?

Better if for solving doesn't need socks clients like tsocks or dante
