can't set up e-mail

Having trouble setting up mail in ubuntu. Have earthlink account. It seems I have error in protocol..When trying to send message I get error message says something about CRTSCTS. Also no incoming messages show up and I know they are there. How do I find where to put in the proper settings and what do I use?

Did you set up the pop/smtp servers as follows in the email client?

-pop.earthlink.net
-smtpauth.earthlink.net

I do not know anything about this Operating System. I've always had Windows. I want to understand Ubuntu. I like the concept. I do not know how to set up an email account or anything.
