Messages read by next button not marked as read.

Asked by Chris Watts

If I open a message directly from the message list, it becomes marked as read, but if I click "next" to open the next message, that message does not get marked as read. Therefore, if I have a number of messages and read them one after another, using the "next" button, I have to mark them, apart from the first one, as "read" manually (or mark the folder as read, if that is appropriate to do).

Is this an option I can set (and if so how?), or (as I suspect) a minor bug?

I just discovered the answer myself. Yes, it is an option one can set. In "mail preferences" you tick the box that says "Mark messages as read after ..." and that's what it does. This includes messages you get to using the "next" button, allowing you to flip through messages, pausing only at the ones you want to read straight away. The ones you open deliberately, from the list, are marked without delay.

It's obvious really.

I have turned this option off and some messages get marked as unread, but the majority get marked as read, just by them arriving in my inbox.
I don't even have to click on them. Anyone experiencing this issue?
Thanks.
