Ubuntu Evolution error on mbox, inbox frozen, waste bin doesn't empty, sendbox okay

Karmic is not supported in any way. It is EOL. Please upgrade to a supported release. Precise is the latest LTS release and supported til April 2017. It will also allow you to upgrade to Trusty in April 2014 directly as it is also LTS and LTS to LTS upgrades are supported.

I need to know how and where I can change the settings for the Mbox for
Evolution,
since my trashbox doesn't allow to be emptied, until a certain limit.
Does upgrading solve this problem, I don't think so.

I would need a direct advisor, to give a step by step procedure, since the
problem has never been solved fully since my previous requests for help.

I, like you, have a unsupported release of Ubuntu (10.10). Because it is unsupported, I do not go on internet, or ask for any support. I am on my own, for 10.10. I also have Windows 98, which also is unsupported. No internet or support. This is my choice. If you choose to keep Ubuntu 9.10, you like me, will be on your own. I would recommend following Actionparsnip's recommendations.

Thanks for your comment, even if it is not as promissing as expected,
but I have just found out about something:
Each time I send out a new email, it will be immediately stored in the
trash-basket,
which is unusual.
All I needed to know here would be the place or where I can change these
evolution settings
as to where what should be saved or not. To my understanding, all that is wrong
here is the present functioning
of evolution, it would need re-adjustments or re-settings. But where on Ubuntu
will I find that manager?

Anyone knows?

Maybe changing/correcting some of the settings for evolution could help with your problem. https://help.gnome.org/users/evolution/3.10/data-storage.html.en lists the locations for the config files for evolution 3.6 and higher. I suppose the version on your system is far older, so you have to check yourself, whether this is also valid for your own system.
Note: Nautilus file manager will by default hide all files and directories with names that start with a dot (like .local or .config). You have to pres ctrl-h to enable display of such "hidden files".

Hi Manfred, well and again, this is exactly what I asked for:
1. WHERE ON MY COMPUTER WOULD I FIND THE (RE) SETTING OPTIONS ?

2. Will Umbuntu 9.10. be older than Ubuntu 3.6. ?

3. By upgrating to 10.10., which I am requested frequently, would such a setting
problem
    be possibly solved as well?

I wonder what's best... I went on that recommended gnome page, but it doesn't
give me any useful directions,
is there anyone who uses 9.10 (or a later version) and could solve this faulty
re-setting tendency?

I would very much need a step by step recommendation, since I am not at all a
soft- or hardware freak myself.

Any one out there in the entire Linux-world who would know how evolution
settings could be corrected? :-))

Don't confuse the release number of Ubuntu with the version number of evolution/gnome.
I guess that the version number of evolution in Ubuntu 9.10 will be something around 2.28.1.

I cannot predict whether upgrading evolution as part of an Ubuntu release upgrade will correct wrong settings.

Have you checked whether the files/directories mentioned in the document of my previous post do exist on your system?

What is the output of the terminal commands

Hi Manfred,

Well I might not have been too clear here about my own technical background,
which is rather tiny I am afraid,
but what I understand now, when and after reading and going through all the
instructions, warnings and guidelines by the given links here,
that I must conclude now, that I see no other path for me than to quit Linux
altogether and give up what I so far have started on this computer. It seems
that Linux could rather be a system for experienced computer software people or
those who have enough funds to pay others, however I see no way for me to safely
follow these given instructions or steps, not only because I have allowed
someone to install Ubuntu on my Net-book, which doesn't even "have" a CD-booth,
on which I could start a back-up.
Still, the Upgrade manager definitely and only tells me to upgrade straight to
10-10 (from 9:10.), it does not tell me to upgrade to 9.40., no.
So what? :-))) Thanks for your support that far, I will probably close this
system down and start al over l from scratch again, I know this sounds quite
helpless or resigning, but, your advices don't sound much more inspiring either.
 Right?

What was needed here is someone who has had exactly that experience with 9.10.
to 10.10 or equally, being able to follow through it all on the phone or even
straight from the screen itself. But as you say, that will be another story
  :-)))

Mypersonal computer background does not seem to be sufficient to follow up those

Completely dumping the system might be a bit of over-reacting. You should try some repair-activities before you do that step.

Excuse me, but what is meant by "terminal commands" ?

I just wonder why the needed settings are to be taken or derived from an online
source,
I just don't get it. There are settings that went astray right on this computer
and why should
there be no place on this machine they could be restored to normal?

I understand, that regularily some earlier versions might get out of support,
but that doesn't really mean, that these earlier versions must therefore
irreparable?

I am just puzzled here, can't recall anything like this from any past MS system,
except there would have been some severe virus or hardware damage.

This to me is a mere re- setting question, isn't it?

However, back to facts:
what were these mentioned "terminal commands" and where can I find them?

"terminal command" is a common shortcut expression for "open a command terminal and issue the following commands".

Open a terminal window (e.g. by simultaneously pressing ctrl-alt-t resp. Strg-Alt-t on a German keyboard) and execute the commands given in my previous post, one by one. You best do that by selecting one line of the commands in tis question document with pressed mouse button thatit is shown in reverse colour, then switch to the terminal window and press the middle mouse button. This should paste that command into the terminal window. Just press 'Enter' to execute.

Finally select all output (using the terminal's menu entry "edit - select all"), copy it ("edit - copy") and paste everything into the Message: box of this question document. (In German language version "Bearbeiten - alles markieren" and "Bearbeiten - kopieren")

I fully agree with you that your problem might be caused just by wrong settings related to evolution.
The commands given should list some details about your system, hoefully including location of the configuration files for evolution.

Attaching screenshots (or any other file) does not work for Launchpad answers. ( I assume the picture that you wanted to post contains a message similar to "A new Ubuntu version 10.10 is available, do you want to upgrade").

The output of the commands shows that your system is not Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, but Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. This changes the situation a bit. The desktop version of Ubuntu 10.04 is no loger supported, but there is a straight upgrade path to Ubuntu 12.04 which is supported for another three years.

To get some more detailed information about your system please provide the output of the following terminal commands:

find ~ -name evolution -ls
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Furthermore please answer the following questions:
1. Are the e-mail messages currently stored in your system important for you, or would it be possible to completely dump all contents
2. Are there files on your system that have to be kept, or would it be possible to delete everything what is there on your computer to install a higher Ubuntu version from scratch.

Okay - HI - I know what you mean

Answer 1:
What is saved or stored on my Netbook is pretty vital for further use,
basically that is why I have started to use it prior to another one, which is
still on MS-Windows (but actually never connected to the internet).

So both, the e-mails (at least 70% of them are quite vital for what I do
surely the sendbox and trash could always be deleted, but this is not what
you mean.
It means, that since it is possible that my version was not 9.10, but 10.4,,
an upgrade to 12.4 straightly, would be recommended and for that it would be
best to remove the whole present contents as well as the old settings - right?
Well, the obstacle here is, that a Netbook has no real harddrives, meaning, no
CD option,
all that could be done is either do a guided back-up on a stick or SD-card
device, if possible (?)

Answer 2.:
Most of the files stored here on this Netbook, are all I have been doing over
the last 2--3 years,
if I would quit Linux entirely, I would have to save them on a stick or card/ or
send the most vital ones
somewhere to be kept until I was ready here/ no, I do need the photos and texts
created for various certain
purposes in the near future. I don't use this PC just for fun or for occasional
chats, which I don't do anyway.

About data: I see that the data on your system are valuable for you, and whatever solution is to be found, it should be able to keep the data.

Ubuntu normally lets a normal user just execute commands that fall in the class of user commands with effect just on the user's own data. IF you want to execute system commands (with potential effect on the whole system), you have to temporarily gain administartive rights. You do that by putting "sudo" in front of the command (or gksudo for graphical applications).

The system will ask for a confirmation that you really want to execute an admin command.
At the prompt "[sudo] password for rolf:" you have to enter your own password as confirmation. Please note, that you will not get any feedback when typing the password (no echo, not even '*' placeholders). So just "blind" type your password and press enter.

The "find..." command has listed an "evolution" directory, so it would be interesting to see what the contents are.

Now please repeat

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

and copy/paste all output as done before.

Please also execute the command

ls -la /home/rolf/.gconf/apps/evolution

and check what you see. This most probably is the directory with the configuration files of your evolution installation.
If that is just a few files (including something that seems to be a configuration settings file), please copy/paste the output into this question document. (If the file listing is several hundres files - which would then most probably be a listing of the mail messages - copy/pasting that does not make sense.)

In any case I would recommend that you invest in an external USB hard disk to be able to crate a backup copy of your important files, just in case there is something going wrong with your system.

Oh dear, since yesterday I am just pusszled with this your reply,
some indications I do get, but most of the instructions are just mind boggling
to me,
I have no clue (at most parts) as to what could be done.
I checked on back-up options in the system files and else where, as I was used
to find
within MS Windows in the past. Here is none such thing.

I am merely puzzled. Well, I told you that I wasn't a com. freak at all, nor am
I English at first language.

Probably too many instructions at once, for someone like me.
I asked a friend in England, but he couldn't come to terms here either.
So - what to do? How to back-up onto a stick or card, and if I go to buy one,
what capacity does it need for such a safe kind of contoled back-up?

Outbox still works well on Evolution, everything else on the computer works
fully all right,
all that is miss-set is reception (incoming mail) and the trash/ sendbox
confusion.

open a terminal as done before

issue the commands

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

As the response to the first command you will get a prompt
"[sudo] password for rolf:"
Type in your personal password (it will not be shown) and press enter, and the command should continue with its output.

Finally select all output and copy/paste into this question document as done before.

No OS is perfect. A little patience is needed when using a free OS. You have shown it.

Actually, from the first reply of Actionparsnip itself you could have taken a good decision. But you were unwavering on your one particular Application. In #3, Michael also put forward Actionparsnip's recommendation. Mine was another reminder actually. I too had problems a few years ago while I was using Ubuntu along with Windows. But now I am using a safer LTS version without much problem.

From the graph given in the first link itself, it would be clear about the life of your OS which affects everything in that application.

If you need only very few applications like sending emails, saving data, Ubuntu will be enough. You can use Thunderbird Mail or your 'favorite' Evolution Mail :) in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. But you should set it first. Or you can use Firefox Web Browser to send/receive emails.

By mistake you said yours is Ubuntu 9.10. If you had verified it properly, all the replies (including mine) wouldn't have been like this.
Also, you didn't mention about the importance of fixing that particular unsupported version.
I believe you will try to take a back-up always hereafter. Since there are so many parameters regarding technology, most people do this.

For your information ....With great patients Manfred had solved my chronic problem (Question #241524) recently. So don't worry.

He is trying to solve earnestly in the same way, step by step as you requested; a great model indeed!
Your unwavering attitude to reach the goal and Manfred's correct instructions ... I can't leave this question without congratulating both of you.

since this one didn't seem too successful
I have tried many times
but many commands were not to be pasted,
or at least they were not showing up once pasted into
the terminal
you will see yourself in a second
all the "password not accepted" replies

Ubuntu differentiates between normal user actions that effect the own data of the user only, and administrative actions with potential effect on the whole system.

Whenever you want to do an administrative task, you have to put sudo in from of the terminal command (or gksudo for graphical programs). The system asks for confirmation, and you have to enter your own password.

As already written earlier, you will get a prompt
 "[sudo] password for rolf:"
and you have to be aware, that you will not see any cursor movement when you type the password, and you will also not see the password on the screen, not even '*' placeholders. YOu have to "blind" type your password and hit enter.

The problem is that you are using an old version of evolution on an outdated and no longer supported release of Ubuntu.
It seems that there is no one able to provide further help. I can't, as I have never used that version myself.

Maybe searching the web for some older support documents might provide some more hints on how to deal with your problems.
Maybe upgrading Ubuntu and evolution to more current supported versions can help, but you have to be aware that such upgrades might also end in a complete loss of your e-mail data.
