In Evolution cannot send e-mails by g-mail as I get the following error message: Must issue a STARTTLS command first. y10sm856508iba.29

Asked by John Wilson

Tryng to send e-mails in Evolution using g-mail
Using a wi-fi system where I have to log onto the wifi system and then each user has to sign onto a website before I am able to surf the net and access my emails.
Downloading them works fine but sending them is very frustrating.
Have Evolution correctly configured but when I try sending e-mails I get the following error message:
"Must issue a STARTTLS command first. y10sm856508iba.29"
Is this too much security?
John

Hello,

You need to set the Pop or Imap settings in Evolution.

Check this link: http://www.runpcrun.com/google-pop3-access

Allan :)

Hi Allan
I am doing volunteer work on a remote S.Pacific Island, normally I am in Canada.
When I set up gmail as per the website link I can receive fine but when I try and send the computer is looking for my Canadian SMTP server and the process times out.
I have deleted all my previous accounts and after shutting down the computer set up gmail from scratch.
How do I change the file telling my machine to look for shawmail rather than gmail?

Regards,
John on Tanna

Hello John,

You need to get the POP or IMAP Settings from shawmail. However, I thought that the Gmail smtp would work.

Allan :)

You will probably need to contact Shaw to get a valid access. If you are not connecting to their mail servers via a Shaw IP they won't let you connect.

You could try accessing it via webmail, you could check that way (and probably at the least initiate a support email).

Thank you for your help. Even though I have set Evolution up for gmail my laptop seems to want to use shawmail
How do I delete the last vestiges of shawmail?
Regards
John

Make sure you are not using shaw's servers in your account configurations.
Many folks will route outbound mail for say GMAIL via their own ISP SMTP server.

Simply reconfiguring your outbound mail to use your own server (or Gmails in that case) should fix this up for you.

I'm sure you're aware, but for convenience I've linked the google help page for this:

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13287

So you may have a setting like this for SMTP:
shawmail.xx.shawcable.net (where xx is your local server), or a more generic one.

Change this to:
smtp.gmail.com:587 (this way you won't get blocked by whatever ISP you are on atm when sending mail).

Good luck,

Thank you for your help.
When I deleted my test message and used a new one it got rid of the problem.
Now it works,
Thanks
