I thought I would get "espeak" from synaptic manager

Asked by freddie sealey

I went looking for espeak on synaptic manager and..its already installed, but when I go looking for it I have to use "find file" to find it in the file cabinet. how do I get it to where its usable and how does it work with text?(got the bright idea to collect a few books and convert them to speech)

thanks,

f

Yes.
Here you get it usable and how does it work with text files.

Option 1, Espeak : Text File (.txt) to .WAV file on your Home Directory (no sound)
Goto menu Applications--->Accesories--->Terminal
copy, paste on the Terminal, and pres ENTER

espeak -f `zenity --file-selection --file-filter=*.txt --title=ESPEAK:TXT-to-WAV` -w $HOME/$RANDOM.wav

Espeak : Text File (.txt) to sound on your speakers (dont save to wav)
Goto menu Applications--->Accesories--->Terminal
copy, paste on the Terminal, and pres ENTER

espeak -f `zenity --file-selection --file-filter=*.txt --title=ESPEAK:Sound-Only`

.

ok. one of these days, you can sit down and explain what we just did. I'm overly tall and it still went over my head :) but I can take instructions :) I think it all works right although I still see the absence of espeak. I tryed "orca" and I got the terminal set-up for the languages and a "steven hawkin" voice :)) but still not quite sure how to go about converting a book over to voice i.e., mark twain etc., and should there not be a espeak somewhere in accessories other than thru orca??

thanks,

freddie

Espeak dont have Graphical Interface.

Command Line applications, like Espeak, dont have icon on accessories.

Orca is oriented to Accesibilty, not to Books.

Command Line applications are highly configurable, so Espeak can speak as you like, just type on terminal : espeak --help

I made that command, by typing "espeak --help" and "zenity --help"

I am waiting for a book that may help my ineptness for command lines and
usage, It just gives me a case of awesomes when I read...."I made that". I
know it takes practice and thats why I'm here.......practicing(If I get it
wrong I still have my original Ubuntu 8.10 CD and I am not ashamed to use it
:)
  Thanks for all your help(I'll most likely need it again :)
