Online accounts and Contacts Manager should now integrate with Empathy but it is impossible to make it work
Online Accounts, the Contacts Manager, and Empathy are supposed to work together now. But adding a Google account is still confusing and messy.
When you eventually figure out how to add online accounts (there is no visible item in system settings, a known bug) you still need to go to accounts settings in Empathy to add the password.
Unfortunately, Empathy keeps forgetting the password, even when that option is ticked -- you would in fact expect Online Accounts to remember and provide it, since you authorized it with Google.
In the end, connecting to Google is all but impossible.
How these three services tie in, and manage account and contact information online, is a mystery. As a user I've no idea what is going on, and how changing groups, for instance, has an effect on my groups on Google proper.
I also have no idea what the difference is between a regular Empathy account, or one added via Online Accounts.
The entire process is utterly confusing (and I've been using Ubuntu for a good five or six years now).
The best solution for now still seems to be: forget about Contacts and Online Accounts and just add the account through Empathy.
I tried searching for a bug report, but I have been unable to find any, or to add it.
If Precise is going to go to market in 15 days, as an LTS (!) how is this ever going to get addressed (problem predates Precise)?
