This sounds like an error on Google's side or your network. I can successfully add gtalk accounts. Try again later and google some guides about how to add accounts to Empathy.

I haven't been able to put any Google Talk accounts only since I put the Beta1 on. It was a clean install. I was able to add accounts without problem in Karmic.

boot into recovery mode and select fix broken packages...it may do the needful because I also find empathy is working fine I have added google a/c and seen it was working fine, on Lucid Beta 1

and if it is not working still then you can remove the package by
sudo apt-get purge empathy (remove empathy with config files then install it )
sudo apt-get install
that should fix the problem

I have the same problem. I want to know if anyone have tried reinstalling Empathy like described by Rajinder.

Can you help with this problem?
