NIC

Asked by adom he

hello, i am having a problem with my internet connection (wired connection1). it seems to be disconnecting and reconnecting about every 15 or 20 minutes or so. I called my local internet provider and they did run some tests and they said everything is working fine. would it be possible that i have the wrong NIC driver installed on my laptop? I am using Ubuntu 12.04 non-pae. My laptop is a Dell latitude D505

What Ethernet chip does the system use?
Have you tried a different cable?
If you run:

ping 8.8.8.8 > ~/Desktop/ping.text

Then use the connection, when the connection drops close the terminal and open the ping.txt file. Scroll to the end, do the pings fail?

01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB PRO/100 VE (MOB) Ethernet Controller (rev 81)
 Subsystem: Dell Latitude D500

I have tried using different new cables and i seem to have the same problem.

i am currently running: ping 8.8.8.8 > ~/Desktop/ping.text in the terminal and my connection hasn't disconnected yet, but as soon as it diconnects and reconects i will open the ping.text file and send the results.

i had my connection drop a few minutes ago, and in the terminal it says:
a@a-Latitude-D505:~$ ping 8.8.8.8 > ~/Desktop/ping.text
connect: Network is unreachable

I opened the ping.txt file, and scrolled to the end, the pings did not fail.

Run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Then try the connection to see if it drops.
