I can't install ubuntu 10.4(alternate)

Asked by albert manahan

Hi, i really like to install ubuntu system but i just can't make it work.
First, i tried installing the ubuntu 10.10 desktop version but it keeps loading forever. it took me a day and nothing happened.
Now i'm using the ubuntu 10.4 alternate CD version because my computer can't load too much graphics. i guess.

This is the specs of my computer.
Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40Ghz
2.39Ghz, 224MB RAM
[Microsoft XP professional SP2]

i also have a problem with partitioning it isn't working...
I want to have windows Xp and ubuntu system on my computer.

but here's the first problem...
1.) I get this error message when it's on the stage of "Checking Cd integrity"
here is the error message >>> pool/main/y/yelp/yelp_2.30.0_0ubuntu2_i386.debfile failed the MD5 checksum verification. Your CD ROm or tis file may have been corrupted.

Take Note : I've burned it on a CD-RW, and burned it on a very slow speed 4x.
I hope someone can help me with this one.
I just can't make it work.
Thanks in advance.

A big problem is: 224MB RAM

Either increase the amount of RAM you have or try Xubuntu or Lubuntu.

"System Requirements
The minimum memory requirement for Ubuntu 10.10 is 256 MB of memory. Note that some of your system's memory may be unavailable due to being used by the graphics card. If your computer has only the minimum amount of memory, the installation process will take longer than normal; however, it will complete successfully, and the system will perform adequately once installed.

Systems with less memory may be able to select "Install Ubuntu" from the boot menu to run just the installer, rather than the whole desktop, or may be able to use the alternate install CD. " - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MaverickMeerkat/ReleaseNotes

While it is not recommended to attempt to run Ubuntu 10.10 on a system with less than 256 MB of RAM, that is not likely to be the cause of the specific problem you are reporting. It *is* likely to be the cause of your difficulties with the Ubuntu Desktop Install CD, but the error message you've received with the Alternate Installer CD typically indicates that the CD itself is corrupted. This could be due to a bad download, a bad burn, a bad drive, or damage incurred to the CD (either before or after the burning process).

You should verify the md5sum of the image you downloaded first. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM (if you're on Windows, you can skip down to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM#MD5SUM%20on%20Windows).

If that doesn't check out correctly, redownload the CD image and try again. (Take its md5sum, as above, before proceeding.) Otherwise, redo the burn and try again.

If the md5sum checks out correctly, then you do not need to download it again.

Furthermore, if you do download it again, you should check the md5sum of the newly downloaded file. Sometimes network conditions can cause repeated corruption of downloaded files. (There are ways to deal with that...but not until you know it's happening.)

You said before that you got an error while it was checking the CD's integrity. If that is the case, it means that the CD is bad (or that you CD drive is bad). Are you saying that this is no longer happening, but that you're getting a different error now?

@ELiah kagan i already gave up installing ubuntu 10.10

I'm hoping that LUBUNTU10.10 would be worth it, i've checked CD integrity, and it said no error.

but then when i'm already installing a message popped up saying error= failed to copy x authorization file.'
i wonder what's the problem now with LUBUNTU....

I'll try to look into this shortly. However, you may want to solicit the help of others as well. You will likely get a faster solution that way.

This is a different installation problem (different Ubuntu flavor, different version, different error message). I strongly recommend starting a new question about this problem, since it no longer fits the topic "I can't install ubuntu 10.4(alternate)". You'll get best results this way. In your new question, you should make sure to include the information you've already provided about your Lubuntu installation problem, and also which install CD you're using (Lubuntu Desktop Install CD; Lubuntu Alternate Install CD; or Lubuntu Minimal Install CD, i.e. the "mini ISO").

If you start a new question for your Lubuntu installation problem, you can mark this question as Solved, since you would then no longer be soliciting further assistance in this question.
