Samsung ML-1710 printer how to install in Ubuntu 8.10

Asked by Don Myers

I installed Ubuntu 8.10 about a week ago. I am a "newbie" to Linux, but pretty good with Windows. I have two printers connected directly to the computer. One is an HP Officejet K5400 and one is a Samsung ML-1710. The Officejet was turned on when I did the Ubuntu install, and it was recognized and the driver installed fine. The Samsung was not turned on during the install. Since then I've tried to install the Samsung. If I turn it on, it is not recognized at all. I tried downloading the Samsung driver and installing it, but I must not have done that correctly. Any assistance you can give about how to get this printer installed and working would be most appreciated. From what I've read here and in Ubuntu forums and on-line, this printer should work fine.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Please open the System → Administration → Printing menu
Select Server → New → Printer
Select the connection where the printer is plugged then press "Forward"
Select Samsung
Select ML-1710 press "Forward"
Then press "Apply"
Then right click on the printer icon select "properties" and pus on the "Print test page" Button

Hope this helps

Yes, the Samsung ML-1710 is supposed to work in Ubuntu.

Have you tried System, Administration, Printing, New Printer? or

Disconnecting the HP, plug in the Samsung and reboot before setting up a new printer?

Thank you to both marcobra and Andre. I tried Andre's solution first since I didn't know how to tell what usb port the printer was on. I had both printers connected on a 4 port usb 2.0 hub. Before I booted this morning, I disconnected the hub and plugged both printers in directly to usb ports on the coimputer, and had the Samsung printer turned on. As soon as I was booted, I checked the printers folder, and the Samsung ML-1710 was there. I opened the properties box for it and printed a test page, and it printed fine. The only thing was I could not close the printer property box after printing the test page. The only way I could get it closed was to reboot.

Is there anything in Linux to selective close a program which isn't working like doing the cnotrol-alt-delete in windows and selecting the program to close?

Thank you.

Right click on the bottom (or top) panel and select "Add to Panel". Scroll down until you find "Force Quit", click on that and then on the "Add" button.

To use this function, left click on the icon and it will tell you how it is used.
