Dell photo 924 installation incompatibility?

Asked by Virginia

I have a new Dell 910 Mini without a disc drive. I own a Dell Photo 924 (all in one) printer. Dell does not provide downloadable software to allow me to print from the Mini laptop. (Dell does want to sell me a new printer and external disc drive...but I just don't have any more money to spend.) How do I solve this problem.....I want to continue using Ubuntu!

Hello Virginia,

CUPS means "Common Unix Printing System". It's the server application which allow you to print using Ubuntu (or Mac, at it's the same on them).

Did you try to plug it on one of your USB ports ? Is it recognised as a new printer (a pop-up window should mark that a new printer has been connected)

Have a nice day.

Yes, I did. What comes up when I try to print from Office is:
Status: default printer
Type: CUPS:_Photo_AIO_Printer_924

Then after I hit enter, I get the message Error While Printing.

I tried to download the software from Dell. But they just offer downloadable software for systems using the Windows operating system. I am guessing that that's where the "error" is.

If this is not solvable, can you recommend a printer which has downloadable software compatible with Ubuntu? (I am on the verge of returning the laptop to Dell and exchanging it for a laptop with a Windows OS --WHICH I DO NOT WANT!! but may have to put up with....I know you guys aren't at fault for this; it seems that Dell (for the first time ever!) is not providing sufficient info when items are purchased and then the consumer gets stuck having to buy more hardware/software from them to make their products work properly)

Did you try to use the assistant to diagnose the failure ? If yes, please copy the results here.

You should also query the Openprinting database, maybe they will have more informations or up-to-date instructions or driver to use your printer : http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/Database/Query

Printers tested under Ubuntu (and Linux in general) and known to work (or not) are listed here : http://openprinting.org/database.html

Hope that it helps you
