I want to capture raw image for a hard disk or mobile phone device in vmware player

I would like to capture raw image (e.g dd format) for a mobile phone device or (a hard disk), if possible in VMware player. I want this image to use in guest VM (VMware player) to analyze data from it, and have to do it by capturing image data. Please be inform that my grip of Linux command is rusty, so please help step by step.
