cannot get the Extra Visual Effect to work

Which Extra Visual Effects did you want to see?

If you mean the Extra Visual Effects accessible via System, Preferences, Appearance then you need to install the driver for your graphics card first.

You do that via System, Administration, Hardware Drivers by placing a tick into the box enabling the driver for the graphics card that your system has detected.

After that you can choose which level of visual effect you would like to see.

yea but now my screen resolution is 800x600 and i can't change it and still no Extra Visual Effects where can I get the correct drivers for my video card

What did you do?
If your screen resolution is 800x600 now, what was it before?
Did you enable your graphics card in the Hardware Drivers section?
Did you restart X?

to change resoultion this may help

1. Press Alt+F2
2. type in "gksudo displayconfig-gtk" (without quote marks)
Run
Click on the "Model" and find your monitor Manufacturer and model.
3. If your monitor is not listed, you can add it by clicking on "Add" button below the Model list, insert your monitor driver CD and find your monitor driver file with .inf extensions (usually it is inside driver directory of your monitor driver CD).
or use the plug and play setting the resolution
and Hz if it goes black don't panic it will come back and then try a different Hz (LCD about 50-60 CRT about 70)

for the drivers in system-administration-sypantic package manager
in the search type envyng and install the program
you will then find it in applications-system tools
you can install the drivers there

I forgot to tell you about compiz if you want effects

try this
To install compiz fusion
you need to have extra repositories enabled..
To enable all the software repositories do ref this link..

after getting all the required repositories enabled
Type the following command in a terminal (applications -> accessories -> terminal)
sudo aptitude install compizconfig-settings-manager
This will add an entry to your System > Preferences menu listed as “Advanced Desktop Effects Settings”.
Make sure that you have “extra effects” turned on by navigating to System > Preferences > Appearance, selecting the Visual Effects tab, and selecting Custom at the bottom. Clicking the Preferences button will also launch the Compiz Config Settings Manager.
and below are the most used short cuts:
SUPER+SHIFT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = draw fire
SUPER+SHIFT+C = clear fire
CTRL+ALT+DRAG LEFT MOUSE = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+LEFT ARROW = rotate cube
CTRL+ALT+DOWN ARROW = flat desktop
SHIFT+ALT+UP=initiate window picker
CTRL+ALT+DOWN=unfold cube
ALT+TAB=window switch
SUPER+TAB=flip switcher or ring switcher depending on which is enabled.

hold the super button then select the windows you want to group and then hit super+g
also You can add new shortcuts.. all that you have to do is just you can select one of the plugin(double click on it) and in actions tab of the plugin, under bindings you can change the shortcuts. You can even add a screen edge as a binding so that when you move your mouse cursor to screen edge(say top left) compiz will execute the particular action. It goes really nice with expo plugin. have a great time with compiz fusion!
