After Upgrade Desktop Missing

Asked by Richard Goeken

I attempted an upgrade on my duel-boot laptop following the instructions on the site. After the upgrade was downloaded and installed---the desktop was missing. The only thing displayed is the background. I can click the power button and get a menu, and I can get to the display background. The wireless is connected. I was trying to go to the latest version, and I believe I needed to go to 10 first. First time actually trying to use this system and this happens. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The first thing you should try is to get into the 2D desktop. On the login screen click the icon next to your name and choose "Ubuntu 2D". Now login as usual. If that works, open the Terminal application, copy over the command below and run it:

dconf reset -f /org/compiz/

This should reset the 3D desktop to it's defaults. Then, logout and choose the normal "Ubuntu" again. Now see if you can login properly.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work.

Received error : Error spawning command line 'dbus-launch --autolaunch=(number here) --binary-syntax --close-stderr': child process exited with code 1.

Following the error code was a usage template and an argument template.

As I really have nothing in this partition (it was for test), how could I write over this version with the latest? That was really my intention---go to the latest.

My recommendation would be to create a new Ubuntu start media (CD/DVD/USB stick), boot from it, mount your harddrive, backup your personal data, unmount the harddrive again and start the installation process. You will be presented with an option to replace the old installation in the process.

Can you help with this problem?
