command not found has crashed most commands not working what to do?

I'd like to say that virtually all crashes are caused by one of the three possibilities:

1) The user is logging in remotely, using putty or other software (including ssh but this case is less common). Putty defaults to broken regional encoding (by today's standards and by the fact that it doesn't match the encoding set in ubuntu). The user types several characters but those characters are encoded incorrectly over the wire (even if they are displayed properly by putty locally).

To fix this, please set putty to use UTF-8 character encoding, it should match the default used in ubuntu now.

2) The user has customized locale settings that doesn't make any sense. This could be analyzed with the output of locale(1) but the general idea is that conflicting, incompatible settings are set in the terminal (like gnome-terminal) and in the environmet variables (such as LC_CTYPE, LC_MESSAGES, etc.

3) In some cases remote ssh can clobber the input buffer because the kernel doesn't properly handle multibyte encodings. This case is very rare but happens only when the user typed something, made a mistake (such as pressing a keyboard key while holding alt pressed), then attempted to correct it by pressing backspace. In certain cases the kernel removes inssuficient number of bytes and thus sends a broken multibyte string back to the program.
