Root privileges

I am a Linux/Ubuntu newbie and I have a problem.

I downloaded the Linux version of Clamav and cannot get it installed, set up or working.

Adept Manager gives me the message: “Read only mode. Need root privileges.” which leaves me no place to turn. I don't understand what this means.

I have no idea how to install the program or run it, how to assert root privileges.

Is there some kind of online Ubuntu users manual that shows how to deal with problems like this????

Why do so many applications require some kind of terminal mode input.

Is there some way to set up my computer so that Ubuntu always automatically recognizes me and bypasses the terminal mode roadblock?

You can type "sudo" in front of a command to get root privileges and then it prompts you for a password. This password prompting is exactly the point why linux is more secure than Windows when it comes to Viruses because a Virus cannot do anything to sensitive areas because there will always be a password prompt. There are some ways to get around this password prompt but it's not really recommended.

Downloading and installing works differently in Linux than it does in Windows. Unfortunately you did not state the format of the downloaded file.

Security in Linux is based on permissions and privileges and it would be an act of utter folly to attempt to circumvent this - not that you can, except in a very limited way.

While you can do many things via the graphical user interface (GUI), you can do everything via the command line interpreter (CLI). Here is a URL that will teach you about the CLI: http://linuxcommand.org/
Bookmark it so that you can access it at any time.

You can check in Synaptic (System, Administration, Synaptic Package Manager) if you have clamav installed - most likely it is already there.
