byobu package

why is byobu window manager on my laptop where did it come from ?

Just wanted to know why byobu window manager was on my laptop and why the package will not fully delete leaving unwanted files doted about ? i'm using maverick 10.10

It's in main repo. Useful for servers and in case a user likes to run a non graphical desktop.
Left packages may be dependencies on other applications.

Hi,

 I did not download it from the main repository or authorise it to end up on my laptop after new software downloads ?
I just wanted to find out was it linked to other software downloaded from the software center ? If so which ?
and how to fully get rid of the residual files ? Feel really angry about so called tag along with other software by stealth rubbish !

I didn't purposely download it either it was just there as it is in main repos. It was in Lucid (which was an upgrade) in Gnome applications menu and also in Maverick (which was a new installation).

Can you tell what these files are and where or do you mean left over packages?

With purge it removes only byobu, which might be rather good when it doesn't remove for example debconf and python since they are basic essentials.

Byobu was part of both the default Ubuntu Desktop and Server in Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. It has been dropped from the Ubuntu Desktop as of 11.04. In 10.04 and 10.10, it was a "recommended" additional package by the GNU Screen package (which was explicitly included in the Ubuntu Desktop/Server seeds).

Byobu, itself, is an enhancement to GNU Screen, which provides some advanced text-based window management functionality. Really handy stuff if you spend much time in a Linux console, but not necessarily useful for non-technical Desktop users.

You can safely purge Byobu from your system by doing:
sudo apt-get purge byobu
sudo apt-get autoremove
rm -rf ~/.byobu ~/.local/share/byobu

Hi obviously i made a mistake and thought about deleting Byobu up until now as i thought it should'nt be there. But recently think i had a strange character graphical problem very occassionally with the odd search box in browsers half vanishing with a couple of white odd lines beneath , and on other occassions i saw blacked squared of letters that did'nt look right so i've made a u-turn and re-installed it apology about the fuss. Did'nt realise it was part of the Default and rarely saw it !
