Thanks Sam,

The system still boots up okay, probably just slower than it should. Before upgrading I had insufficient room in the / partition so used a puppy Linux partition editor to pinch some space from a fat partition just before the / partition. Reading one of the bug messages above seems to point to that being the problem. When upgrading to 10.04 should I download the ISO file and do a fresh install with a partition reformat or just do the upgrade?

Good idea to start from scratch.

When playing with partitions UUIDs might change.
