bluetooth-applet is the manager bluez uses, and its icon sits in the taskbar -- left click on it to pair a device. If icon not present, run it directly:
sudo bluetooth-applet

i can see the bluetooth icon on the taskbar above. when i left click it, it shows me the following menu.

bluetooth:on[faded]
Turn off bluetooth
Preferences

when i click on the prefrences, it shows me a dialog box with title: Bluetooth Prefrences

in the dialog box, there is a message" Bluetooth is Disabled " and a button in the middle containing the text " turn on bluetooth" [faded](means button is not active)

the strange thing is even if, i "turn on" the bluetooth from the menu, it shows the message" bluetooth is disabled" in bluetooth preferences and a small "RED CROSS " on the bluetooth icon even then. but, when i " Turn OFF" the Bluetooth from the menu it activates the button "Turn on Bluetooth" in the Preferences menu, but even after turning it ON it don't work.

I'v also run the command " sudo bluetooth-applet" in the terminal. It gives me the following output.

incredible@incredible-Inspiron-N5010:~$ sudo bluetooth-applet
[sudo] password for incredible:

Sometimes bluetooth uses a switch -- please type:
rfkill list
to see the state of the software/hardware switches
You should have "no"s on the Soft and Hard blocked lines for bluetooth.

Under the classic menu system/preferences/startup applications, is the "bluetooth manager" checked off? You should have a menu choice "setup new devices" when you left click on the bluetooth icon in the task bar. If not, under system/preferences/bluetooth you should have a button to "setup new device".

Revision history for this message
!ncredible (atul498) said :

first, there is not any "setup new device" when i click on the bluetooth icon on the taskbar.

in the system settings, when i click on the "startup and shutdown" icon , it opens the new window containing three items :

Autostart
service manager
session management

under Autostart there is nothing dscribed about Bluetooth

under Service Manager, there are again two categories 1. Load-on-demand services, 2. startup services.

under 1 there is nothing realted to bluetooth.
under2 there is a process BLUEDEVIL- blutooth management service, which was "not runnning". i changed it to "running"

When i click on the Bluetooth icon in the system settings, it opens a window containing three categories.

Devices
file Transfer
Adapters

under each category there is one thing common i.e. a message " No Bluetooth Adapters have been found"

"Startup Applications" is not "Startup and Shutdown", which I never heard of. It may also be found in Natty's new interface under applications, all applications, Tweaks... It should open a window with about two dozen items, starting with Bluetooth manager, which should be checked.

Sounds like you have some other bluetooth software installed, which does not work. The below package are what I see installed on my system, and the two running processes for bluetooth. I don't even recall having to install bluez, I think it was the default. I'd sudo apt-get purge blueWhatever from your system and then sudo apt-get install bluez.
See if the other support packages are automatically brought in, install them if not.

The idea behind doing "sudo apt-get purge <every bluetooth package> is to get rid of all (unwanted) bluetooth config files. Then when you reinstall bluez, it wont say "bluez isalready the newest version" and give up, but it should reinstall all the bluez config files as well as the bluetoothd (which is still not running from your last ps listing). the dpkg command take a lower case L for the "listing", piped to grep to list just bluetooth related packages:
dpkg -l | fgrep blue

Did you reboot afterwards? Then take another look at the running processes with blue in their names (the ps command). You should see one named bluetoothd. From the above, the only thing I can see that might have caused files not to be removed is that there were still running bluetooth processes when the packages were deleted. Another possibility is that the package scripts dont do a complete job removing their files -- the safe (paranoid?) thing is to look for files still around after the package deletes.

;0 :)

Atlast,, my problem has been solved. but, the strange thing is that the problem was not in Ubuntu or any Package, it was hidden somewhere else.

I have also installed Window 7 with ubuntu. yesterday i noticed that i'v disabled BLUETOOTH in Win7 since i dont use it while using windows. So, i enabled it and then switched to Ubuntu..... and BINGO--- its working, bluetooth start working in Ubuntu also.

but, one thing am failed to understand, how can settings of windows can effect the ubuntu? i mean, I am using a completly different operating system and win7's settings should work only in win7, it should not effect the LINUX.

plz, tell me if you have any information on this issue...

so, a special thanx to "ubfan" for taking so much interest into my problem and also for trying to solve my problem with every possible way.

plz do a last favour to me... tell me how can i learn the terminal commands to run the linux? i really want to learn the linux, but i don't know anything about these commands and how they work. Should i learn the UNIX?

Good to hear you got things working. Looks like Ubuntu does not fully initialize the bluetooth hardware when booting, probably worth a bug report. Happens sometimes with some kernels -- once the optical mice lost their laser when some peripheral chip voltage was not set, which was fixed next kernel.

Passing along Grant Bowman's thoughts on learning shell commands:
A FAQ I hear from time to time at Linux User Groups is: where can I
learn about Bourne/Bourne Again SHell (BASH) scripting?

Michael Paoli also has an excellent guide online.
http://www.rawbw.com/~mp/unix/sh/ From experience teaching scripting
he recommends starting with the six page 1979 sh man page!
http://plan9.bell-labs.com/7thEdMan/v7vol1.pdf

Another good answer seems to be the "Advanced Bash-Scripting Guide"
http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/ which despite the title doesn't start at
the Advanced level. That's where you will end up after reading it.
If you are not already familiar with it, the Linux Documentation
Project is a fantastic resource for FAQ and HOWTO documents that many
people (including myself) have used to teach themselves a number of
related topics. This guide is also recommended from
