You might have to install the bluez package to get bluetooth running:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bluez

please run:
sudo rfkill list
to see if you have any hardware switches to turn on.
Sometimes there is a software switch which works with wifi which also controls bluetooth.

I am also facing the same problem.
If I give the command :
sudo kill bluetoothd
sudo bluebooth

it gets enabled.

bluez is already installed.

The problem started in 11.04. Before that it was working fine.

Hi,

I can confirm the problem with ubuntu 11.04 and a bluetooth adapter.
Putting in the bluetooth adapter, the bluetooth icon will be shown in the indicator applet, but bluetooth is not active (red x). Everytime you put in the adapter you have to restart bluetooth with 'sudo /etc/init.d/bluetooth restart'. That's annoying.
With Ubuntu 10.10 this was o.k.

Can you help with this problem?
